The 2016 Austrian youth IGF was held on 30th September, just after the end of our Vienna training. It was all around hate speech, part of the No Hate Speech Campaign and the Youth Councils #MeinNetz campaign. The #MeinNetz campaign was created to inform about young peoples reality online and support policy making that reflects that. In the core of the campaign stood the topics digital participation, digital literacy and hate speech.
The event took place the in the Ministry of Youth, who also host digital information campaigns for young people like the the Rat auf Draht. After a few short introductions from Florian, our youth delegate, ZARA training, a speaker from the Police prevention services and NERDY’s very own gameoverhate project the group went into discussion. They discussed how to address hate postings on social media, reporting systems, the juristical situation of hate speech in Austria, removal of posts and policies of facebook and counter speech as a way to address the topic.
